London was undoubtedly the centre of the limelight this year because of the amount of great spectacles; The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London 2012 Olympics and London 2012 Paralympics however the closing ceremony of London 2012 Olympics was one which showed the world an insight to the culture and fashion of the largest South American country, Brazil.

During the handover of the Olympics from London to Rio 26 million worldwide viewers saw performances by an array of glittering flamboyant Brazilian dancers, wearing high visible attires that being said that is not all Brazil has to offer (like Great Britain we saw a countless amount of the population wearing Red, White and Blue) Brazil is a nation which is full of colour the dancers were just a small aspect of the culture that they offer.

Undoubtedly, we will see a rise in Brazilian designers in mainstream fashion and this is already apparent with the emergence of Cris Barros, Vanessa Montoro and Patricia Viera which were clearly the ones to keep an eye during Sao Paulo Fashion week.

Our note: Cris Barros, Vanessa Montoro and Patricia Viera all have designs which are very clean cut and each design house has subtle hints which distinguish themselves from each other. Cris Barros’s design has an infusion of urban refinement (a balance which is very challenging to maintain). Vanessa Montoro’s design is very ‘chic’ and they can rival any attires made by the big hitters of fashion. To tell you the truth we are really excited with Patricia Viera’s work her designs in our opinion are ready to be introduced in Great Britain her designs are very intuitive to London Fashion and this isn’t surprising as she has worked closely with buying houses like Barneys NY, Collette, Paul Smith, Biff & Banner,
Joyce Hong Kong, Browns, Feathers, Bugatti, and others.

Like how the limelight was fixated with London culture, music and fashion we hope that these blossoming designers can capitalise on the exposure that will be present during 2016 because those few weeks can make them into house hold names.

But Brazil is also the home to supermodels Gisele and Emanuela de Paula, the creative director of Calvin Klein, and two annual fashion weeks — the biggest of which has helped position the country as one of the world’s most important fashion capitals. In advance of São Paulo Fashion Week, which begins this Monday, we spent an afternoon with Jodie Monteiro and Daniel Freire, the writing and photography team behind SP Street Style.

What do you look for in the people you photograph?

We look for fashion that’s original and interesting, but not so mainstream. [Jodie stops a girl in a leather jacket and a long black skirt and asks if Dan can photograph her.]

I stumbled across this company, The Real Deal Brazil, located in NC. They make hats and bags out of canvas tarps used in Brazil to cover truck loads as they criss-cross the South American nation. Pretty cool.

Interesting. Waterproof fabric is hard to find, well, waterproof with some sustainable credentials.

A 19th century jewellery set made from Assyrian and Babylonian cylinder and stamp seals, belonging to Lady Layard.

The seals date from anywhere between 2000 and 600 B.C., the gold mounting from the late 1800s.

This practice, where ancient artefacts, when pretty enough, were reused as jewellery, was prevalent in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Interesting article from the New York Times about Zara. No mention of the sweatshop allegations that were leveled at Zara here in Brazil.

Held up as the beacon model of Fast Fashion. In my experience here in São Paulo though, the stock does not change that quickly, although there is a lot of rearranging of layouts.

Three years before, designer Jum Nakao spent 700 hours painstakingly cutting, curling, pleating and manipulating paper into stunning dresses for his collection showcased in Sao Paulo Fashion Week 2004. Which at the end of the runway show, the models lined up side by side and ripped their paper-dresses off.
